Dog runs out of house, How do I get him to come back willingly?

by admin on February 21, 2010

He is a pekeapoo I very recently got him….His former owner passed away – he is 2 yrs old.
Gizmo runs out everytime we open the door!!! I know I have to train him so he doesn’t run out comes back when I call him BUT in the meantime, How do I get him back when he runs out?? We live near a freeway so waiting it out could lead to him getting run over!!! I already love the little bugger!!!

Get him to sit a few feet away from the door and make him stay. Treats, treats, treats tons of praise when he obeys. As for making him come back, the same method but start working on it while he’s in the house and on a long leash in the yard.

Good luck!!

We always left the collar and leash on our dog so that way if she got out, it’d be a little easier catching her. The other thing was to bring the neighbors dog to get her attention. Then we just grabbed her.

In the meantime until you get him trained, try this little trick my trainer taught me. Instead of running after him, run away from him, calling his name in a high silly voice. He’ll think you’re playing and come after you. It works!

Run outside with the dog’s favorite treat. Do NOT chase after the dog…it’ll just keep running away from you. Instead, pretend like YOU are the one running away from the dog…make a show of running around in a few circles and trick the dog back into the house.

Also, just be minful from now on not to hold the front and back door open for too long. Even the best-trained dog in the world will run outside if something catches his attention…and the fact that you live by a freeway? Better safe than sorry.

Other then the training already suggested, look into getting a kid or pet gate to put outside your front door in the mean time. I had to do this with one of our puppies. It can be a hassle to have to climb over all the time, but it works wonders for what you need it for.

I would really suggest using it until you get him properly trained, especially if you live by a high traffic area.

As much as you want to yell at him when he runs out, praise the fur off him when he comes to you. Practice inside with a leash. Tug the leash and say come and when he does praise him and give him a little treat. He will associate coming to you with fun stuff rather than with being in trouble.

If you go out chasing him ,he may well make a game of it. Very dangerous! Get some very tasty treats and say Gizmo, want a treat? Immediately give him one. Practice this and make sure he always gets that treat. Put him on a long leash or rope or whatever you can to give him some running space. Open the door so he runs out. Immediately say your treat phase. If he doesn’t respond, yank his rope and yell, Gizmo! As soon as he turns, say your phrase, pull him in. He should come willingly, but may need help at first. If you know the door is going to open, it is wise to have a grip on him beforehand, very wise. Or keep a leash on him you can grab as he heads for the door. He is in big trouble when he escapes, so preventing needs to happen before he can get out at this point. Teaching him Down! may help.

you gotta take control! if you call his name and say no seriously and he still doesn’t come back, get a leash and a collar and tie him around your house. everytime he walks out the door get him and tap his nose and say no. also, tie him the way i told you to. soon he will realize what he is doing wrong. when he doesn’t walk out the door remember to praise him a lot and saying good boy. i can’t guarentee this method will work. if anything you should get some training lessons or a doggie training book. best of luck, take care!!

I have a cock-a-poo .They love lots of excise ,walking ,running ,playing ball .You have got to give this to Gizmo .Then he’ll be tired ,happy ,and ready to come in the house .I live in an apartment and walk mine at least 3 or 4 times a day, plus play ball ,just go to the park or coffee shop ,and hang out, where he can interact,or just lay in grass .I also suggest ,that until he obeys, keep a light leash on him.

You could try setting him up. Have someone stand outside your front door with a small cup of water. Just out of site but close to the door. Open the door and when Gizmo gets in site have them toss a face full of water on him. A few times of this should give Gizmo a little hesitation about just busting for the door when it’s opened. Up until now there’s been no downside.
