I have an 11 month Lhasa Poo puppy and he stays in the house because he’s a small dog, 17 pounds. When he notices that the front door is open, he tries to run outside. When he is able, he runs far and tries to get away from us. When I call him back, he doesn’t come, and runs further away. How can I train him to come back when I call if he is outside? Is this just something that he does because he’s still a puppy, even though he is neutered? I have heard that there are things that I can put up to stop him from going somewhere: somewhat like invisible fences around my house, is this true?

You CAN get an invisible fence — which works by giving your dog a small shock, when he crosses over it, but I’d be worried about such a small dog getting too big of a shock and also, really determined dogs have been known to bust right through them with no effect.
Your best bet is work very hard on his recall skills, ie getting him to come to his name. This is one of the most basic training commands and yet one of the hardest to teach your dog. He could probably benefit from a basic obedience course, which teaches him to pay more attention to you and your commands than any distractions that might be around.
One way to teach the command come is to say it when the dog is already coming to you for attention or play or because you’re putting his food bowl down. Then praise him and reward him with a treat. Get your dog to associate the word with going toward you and getting rewarded for it.
In the meantime, the next time he runs away, try making a big commotion and then running AWAY from him. Some dogs like to chase things, so if you run away from him, he might come after you.
Also, do make sure your dog always wears an ID tag on his collar and consider microchipping him. This is a smart thing to do with any escape artist dog.
